Do you have a heart for those who are broken and need someone to share the love of Jesus? Our team from COTR is reminded of the scripture in Matthew 25:36 “I was in prison and you came to see me”!
Men and women will have an opportunity to assist in a mentoring program with a well trained volunteer. The first step is to fill out an application for a state badge from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. You can get an application at the church office, and then contact Judy Mills for further information.
At this time, we are most active at the women’s prison, in McLoud, Ok. “Mabel Bassett Correctional Center”. There are many possibilities for you to volunteer special tasks like teaching, secretarial, etc., but the Christian mentoring program, called “Gifts”, (giving incarcerated females trust and support) is our main focus at this church. We visit a group of 2-5 women once or twice a month and share bible studies, book reviews, or personal prayer time. This ministry meets on Monday evenings, at the prison, at 5:45, and we leave at 8:00 p.m., we car pool from OKC if possible.
You will find this experience one of the most fulfilling 2 hours you can ever imagine. It is available for those who are willing to give attention and care for inmates who don’t have anyone to come see them. Join us as we take the “Good News” to those who need emotional healing and a hope and a future inside the walls of prison.
Testimonies from some inmates at Mabel Bassett:
Brandy: “Since I’ve been attending mentors, I’ve grown more spiritually and have realized that there are people who care and truly love us.”
Sharon: “My mentor is such a blessing to me. I very seldom ever get a visitor, and she treats me like family. She makes me feel so special and listens with a heart. My mentor is God’s very extra special gift to me!”
Candy: “My mentor has taught me many things and helped me to grow in my walk with the Lord. This time also gives us something to look forward to!”
Rosemary: “Having a mentor has been a great encouragement to me. I look forward to the visits and the spiritual food I know I’m going to receive. Put simply, “I love the mentor program!”
Gwen: “My mentor is a friend that I can socialize with and she gives me spiritual guidance. My mentor visits more often than my family does, and I truly thank God for her friendly, loving, encouraging spirit, and presence in my life!”
